Updated: Jun 25, 2023
This hidden gem was not easy to find, and honestly, it’s probably not for everyone. In Uluwatu, Bali, Nunggalan Beach is most known for the shipwreck with vibrant graffiti art. First, let me say that the picture above was taken after a massive storm, which is why the beach looks filled with debris. You'll need to take a short 20minute hike, but it's worth it if for a beautiful beach with less crowds. Also, you can walk along beach, over rocks and through the water to explore Nyang Nyang Beach.
When we went on this adventure we ended up lost at times, so I'll guide you through the journey to Nunggalan Beach and Nyang Nyang Beach so that you can do it with ease.
Navigating the Path to Nunggalan Beach: A Hidden Gem in Uluwatu
Navigating our way to Nunggalan Beach proved to be an adventure in itself. Even our driver had trouble finding the exact location, but luckily some locals guided us towards the hidden path leading to our destination. To get a beach walk in and also see multiple beaches, we had our driver drop us off at Nunggalan Beach and then later pick us up at Nyang Nyang. If you are scootering or driving yourself, go left at Villa Plenilunio to park. Bring cash as there is a small fee. To the right is the path to the beach. It's about a 20 minute hike through the jungle to the beach. Sometimes there are a few warungs with snacks and drinks on the way down.
We visited during the monsoon season, and the lush jungle surrounding the area created a breeding ground for mosquitoes, so be sure to wear and reapply bug spray. To make your journey more enjoyable, remember to wear comfortable water shoes, especially if it has rained recently, as the path can be slippery. They will also come in handy if you are making the trek through the water to Nyang Nyang.
Experiencing the Untouched Beauty of Nunggalan Beach
Once we reached the bottom, the mesmerizing beauty of Nunggalan Beach unfolded before our eyes. The stunning cliffs, clear waters, and the invigorating scent of saltwater filled the air. Since we went so early, we had the privilege of having the entire beach to ourselves, making it a truly private and unforgettable experience. You can swim and surf hear, however, it's going to be mostly reef. So again, I'd recommend water shoes.
Journey to Nyang Nyang Beach
After reveling in the tranquility of Nunggalan Beach, we set off to Nyang Nyang Beach. Determining the right direction posed a small challenge, as "right" can be interpreted differently. But with the help of a friendly local fisherman, the only person in sight after walking for quite sometime, we found our way. If you are looking at the ocean, Nyang Nyang Beach is to the right. Prepare yourself for an exhilarating trek, climbing over rocks and wading through the ocean. Do not go unless it’s low tide, you have water shoes, and you feel comfortable. There are no lifeguards here. The beach will unveil as you walk through the water and over the rocks.
Nyang Nyang Beach
Arriving at Nyang Nyang Beach marked a moment of triumph. We removed our water shoes and savored the sensation of soft sand beneath our toes. As we strolled along the shore, we discovered a charming coconut shack, offering refreshing coconuts and the iconic Bali beer, Bintang. Indulge in a well-deserved treat as you take in the picturesque scenery and relish the tranquility of Nyang Nyang Beach before making the trek up to the top. Cars are not allowed down to the beach, so you will need to meet your driver at the top.
